I love my Bible. I love it because it’s the Word of God, but I also have a sentimental attachment to it because it’s been mine since I graduated from high school. It is all marked up. I have notes from sermons, my favorite sayings and important papers that I’ve slipped inside. It also has verses that I have highlighted that, at one time or another, have been especially meaningful in my life. My Bible is falling apart, but I wouldn’t want a new one.
Tonight I was flipping through, looking for a scripture to share and found one of my favorite highlighted verses. It is in 2 Chronicles 16:9 – “For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.”
The word support has many meanings and gives us an idea of all that God is and does for us. Support is “a thing that bears the weight of something or keeps it upright”. It provides “comfort and emotional help to us”. It is “encouragement”. It means God is there to hold us up, carry us through, prop us up, and bear our burdens. He provides reinforcement, maintains, sustains, keeps and takes care of every need we have. He looks after, comforts, encourages and sustains us. He consoles us, provides solace for, reassures, and champions for us. He helps, assists, aids, encourages, stands behind and defends us. He provides friendship, offers strength, solace and relief. He is there to be a comfort and help. He is a tower of strength, our prop, and the mainstay in our lives.
When we place our faith in Christ for our salvation this is one of the promises (or perks) that God provides for us. When we completely and fully trust Him with our whole heart He is faithful in providing us with all these things that the word support means.
God knows that things are going to come into our lives that require the kind of support that “keeps us upright”. He understands that this life is one riddled with pain and distress. But He also wants to be our foundation on a daily basis. We don’t ever have to live with insecurity, fear or the uncertainty. He loves us and He wants what is best for us. He delights in providing every need we have – big or small. He doesn’t want us to place our trust in anything but Him. We can know that He is there to be our rock, our mainstay and He will not only support us but STRONGLY support us because we are His.
